Pure as a piece of heaven

Published January 28, 2010 by Syllable

In the unassuming suburb of Colbyn in Pretoria, there is a rare green gem called Pure. Truly one of its kind, this café and deli is run by owners Frances Geldenhuys and Elsabe van der Walt.

The atmosphere is always buzzing; the menu divinely unique and simplistic. Every item on the menu has been tested by Frances and Elsabe, and only uses the best and the freshest ingredients. There is no compromise on quality or service here.

The wholesome dishes will put a twinkle in your eye – who said healthy food must be bland and uninspiring? With names like Strawberry fields, Spring meadow, Rosy cheeks and Picnic juice, the menu invokes an eternal summer. Coffee at Pure is a treat: barista Cornelius was awarded third place in the 2009 Regional Barista Competition and hones his skill daily.

The décor, like the menu and the hosts, is stripped of pretence, with loads of natural light and seating provided both indoors and on the sidewalk. On most Saturday mornings a live jazz band entertains the crowd over brunch.

Modest as it may be in its suburban setting, Pure is a great venue for outstanding food and excellent conversation.
